Well, gone are the days when we resorted to our savings to pay for a holiday or even home improvements.
According to the latest report from ING Direct, it is paying for day to day bills that is causing the biggest dent in people’s savings.
Of those surveyed, 42 pc said that they use money from their savings to pay for household bills.
The situation is set to get worse, the research warns, with the latest price increases from energy suppliers.
The number of people using savings to pay bills – equivalent to 4.5million – has increased every year since the study by ING Direct started in 2009.
Households have also been hit by rises in TV, internet and home phone bills, according to thisismoney.co.uk.
