Consumer groups say that the householders will still have to shop around for cheaper deals despite the government’s plans to end ‘the rip-off charges and confusion’ by the energy companies.
Energy Secretary Ed Davey has announced plans to restrict the energy companies to offer four energy tariffs only for each gas and electricity.
“Bill payers will no longer face the impossible choice between hundreds of tariffs,” he said on Tuesday.
Following the government’s announcement, there were warnings, too, about a possible risk of ‘a general levelling up of prices,’ as Adam Scorer, of Consumer Focus, put it.
Corin Taylor of The Institute of Directors is quoted by the Times saying that “clumsy regulation restricting choice simply allows energy companies to increase their lowest tariff, ensuring a higher minimum price for consumers”.
