The cost of heating a home has increased by 63% and the annual bills are now £227 higher than they were five years ago, according to the research done by uSwitch, the price comparison website.
The news comes after five (British Gas, SSE, npower, EDF and Scotish Power) of the big six energy suppliers raised their prices by an average of 7% this autumn.
“Recent price hikes from energy suppliers will add £753 million onto energy bills and push 314,000 households into fuel poverty,” said Ann Robinson, Director of Consumer Policy at uSwitch.
She added that “many households will feel that they have little choice but to turn their heating down or off, and by doing so risk gambling with their health.”
Heating is the highest overall household expenditure and, according to uSwitch, it has grown more than three times faster than any other cost.
