Engage Brain, then Tweet

In the midst of the Frankenstorm, it was really only a matter of time before some Social Media howlers cropped up, and the main culprits this morning appear to be Gap, with this Tweet and Foursquare check-in:

And American Apparel with this email offer for their ‘Hurricane Sandy Sale’:

Gap’s tweet has now been removed, but as ever in the online realm, these things live on, and social media channels have been humming with negative vibes about the brands. Gap issued this apology on their Twitter feed:

...but with mentions of brand boycotts and general slating from the masses, these messages branded attempts to “capitalize on disaster” appear to have struck the wrong chord.

It can be tempting to jump on the bandwagon of national and international news stories, but be careful to think before you tweet, and if you’re not sure how your message might go down, keep quiet.
