Relevant,Concise and Engaging: Ten Tips for Optimising your Facebook Page

In light of the recent announcement that Facebook has rocketed past one billion active monthly users (yes, 1,000,000,000! That’s nine zeros!), it seems more important than ever that businesses, large and small, have an active and optimised Facebook presence.

Many have been sceptical about the benefits of advertising through the Facebook medium, but the sheer volume of active users on the social site means that for any business a well-constructed and targeted page has the potential to bring in fantastic results.


Here are just a few tips for getting the most from your Business’ Facebook Page

  • Make sure you have a page, not a profile. Your brand advocates and fans need to be able to connect with you in an instant by ‘liking’ your page, rather than initiating friend requests or subscribing to a profile.
  • Be creative with your content. Videos are shared 12 times more than text and link updates, combined. Images are liked twice as much. Of course you have text news and links to share, but be sure to vary your postings to draw people from their News Feeds across to your Business Page Timeline.
  • Be open. Your Business Page is a great opportunity to share who you are and what you do. Make the most of the About section; update your company milestones; expand on the history of your brand… Help your fans to know you better.
  • Make the most of your image space. A consistent core profile picture makes it easy for your followers to identify you in their News Feeds. Use the Cover space and your Page’s Wall to share images of your brand, team, products, events, and greatest achievements, keeping your followers in the loop and engaging them with all aspects of your enterprise.
  • Don’t post too often. Facebook algorithms filter content for the News Feed to put only the ‘most important’ updates on the Feeds of your fans. Encourage Likers to interact with your content through questions and calls to action: Like, Post, Comment, Share etc.
  • Keep it short and sweet. Research suggests that shorter posters (around 80 characters) get a greater response. Try to stick to full-length URLs when sharing on Facebook, though: people want to know where a link is going to take them.
  • Communicate! When your fans post and comment on your posts, respond in a timely fashion. Keep the conversation going and boost your rankings for Facebook’s algorithms.
  • Monitor with Facebook Insights. Use the Facebook Insights tab to identify the types of post that get the greatest interaction. You can also discover where your brand advocates are, along with a breakdown of gender, age, and when people are liking and un-liking your page.
  • Promote events and special offers. Special discounts, competitions and events for Facebook followers can be a great way to increase interaction with your brand’s page. You can further share these updates and promotions through your other Social Media channels and via email and newsletters to encourage the involvement of your network.
  • Thank your followers. Consider introducing a Fan or Fan’s Page of the week, based on those who interact with and champion your brand the most. Find ways to give back to your Facebook Community through offers, information and useful posts that will keep them coming back to your Page and sharing your posts.

Facebook recently changed how Business Page posts show up in fans’ news feeds. To ensure your fans still see your communications ask them to add your page to their Interest Lists:

To ensure you still see posts from your favourite pages:
  • Hover over their name (only works on your computer)
  • Click on/hover over ‘Liked’ and select ‘Add to Interests Lists…’
  • Select the pages you’re most keen to receive updates from and add them to customised lists.

Choose whether to make your Lists public, available to friends, or for your eyes only.
You can find your new Interest Lists with all the other tabs on the left hand side of your News Feed.
