Where did Royal Mail go wrong?

I'm constantly asked why I've started delivering mail. The honest reason is payback. I was approached 2 years ago by Royal Mail wanting to know about my leafletting activities - what I charged, how I got my work, my overheads, etc. At that point I knew they were planning to move into leaflet distribution. So I canvassed local businesses to try to acquire some of their small business mail delivery clients.
16 months ago, I got my only reply and after an initial meeting proceeded to deliver for them. Then about 3 months ago I got the news I'd been waiting for - "Royal Mail price increases". I now deliver for a number of varied businesses on a guaranteed price scheme.
What went wrong?
Firstly, the closure of dozens of small village post offices and scrapping the two deliveries a day we used to get. This was seen as a cost-cutting measure and nothing more sinister than that.
Secondly, the decision by Ofcom to lift the cap on Royal Mail prices leading to the current situation where stamps cost 50p/ 60p for the relative 2nd/ 1st class service.
And the future?
Next up is another, smaller price rise for stamped deliveries. I also predict it will be announced that franked services will be increased within 18 months, there will possibly be another bout of PO closures and all this is geared toward one thing - making the books look good for privatisation. And once it's a plc running the network, there will be no limit to the price hikes.
So, for the people that have shared my vision and saved over £1000 in 10 weeks, I thank you for your trust. For all those who have questioned my honesty, integrity or have just called me plain mad for my foresight, I won't say "I told you so" but I'll be happy to offer a quote if you decide to join me.
