I have had many businesses recently torn between using CJay Distribution for their mail delivery needs around BB and BL postcodes and moving from stamps to a franking machine. Obviously, this is something I do not recommend for small/ medium businesses. It does mean I get the work, but the savings that can be made using a franking machine are very small compared to the costs involved in the upkeep and operation.
In discussions with one business who shall remain nameless, I was informed that it would take them nearly two years for a franking machine to pay for itself based on an average of 400 letters per month. This was assuming there were no breakdowns or ink top-ups required. The factor they hadn't taken into consideration was the manual feed that their choice of machine had. How much would it cost to pay someone to frank 400 letters per month? Answers on a postcard please.
So, using an independent mail delivery specialist such as CJay Distribution can benefit your business in more than just a financial sense. It also means employees have a little more time to do what they are paid for instead of standing in front of a machine.
In the coming months, with Royal Mail privatisation now on the horizon, there will be a number of leaflet distributors expanding into mail delivery and they will have to come in with cheaper prices than CJay Distribution. But we got ahead of the market by moving into mail delivery in February 2011. There is currently an 18 month gap between us and any competitors. 18 months of fine-tuning which they will need to go through before they reach this point - by which time, we will be a further 18 months down the road.
6 regular businesses (and a few casual, bulk drops) saving £1000 against 2nd class stamped postage in 10 weeks from mid-April to the end of June speaks for itself. This is over 5000 letters in this time with the 2 weeks in April being compared to the lower rate 36p that 2nd class stamps were before the price increase.
Time to get behind local businesses and save YOUR business time and money.
