Although I'd designed countless company business cards when I was in employment I didn't really understand how they were used before I got out there and started networking and meeting my own clients. Business cards can be an important tool in creating the right first impression with a new contact. But what should be included on them in order to make the most of the opportunity? In a world of email, smart phones and social media, do printed cards still have their place?

As someone who designs a lot of business cards for clients and frequently attends business networking events I believe that they most definitely do still have their place. In fact, I’d argue that with more and more methods of communication available to us, a business card is as important as ever as a straight forward means of passing our details on to a new contact. They can be a significant tool in being remembered and it’s also a chance to reinforce the benefits that you deliver to your clients. Use both sides of the card and don’t just include your contact details – make sure that people know what you do!

There are no rules on what details should be included – it should be whatever is appropriate to your business. How are your customers likely to contact you? How do you prefer them to do so? Give prominence to the most important details and leave off those that are rarely used – you can always list a full them on your website. Make it easy for people to contact you and give them the information that they need to know. Although you'll occasionally hear some people saying they distrust a company that doesn't have a postal address on their business card - their reasoning being that it gives the impression that it may up sticks and disappear more easily - it seems like a reasonable compromise if it can easily be found on the website.

Keep the design uncluttered so that people can easily find the relevant information and don’t forget to consider the card stock and print finish. Reflect your company brand in the design of the card and set the tone for how you wish to be regarded – get it right and it can make a huge difference to how you and your business is perceived.
