I find that twitter is generally the best tool to get things moving and engage with a large number of people quickly. Particularly if your target market is business custom. Then from the point of view of building and maintaining more personal business relationships i would say that LinkedIn is essential.

For business use in the past i have found Facebook to be one of the least effective, as most users are there purely for social interests (i.e. chatting to their friends).

I've been using facebook a lot, but for me it is perfect as I'm targeting a lot of people that i already know.

Twitter for me, although I've had some success on LinkedIn too. In fairness they are the only ones I've put serious effort into though so it's perhaps an unfair comparison. I've done a little work at creating a Facebook page and have consciously blurred the line between purely social contacts and business-related ones with who I have on as friends. Forums elsewhere have also generated work.

I think if your target market is other businesses, then Twitter and LinkedIn are going to always come out on top.

If your goal is to reach end consumers, facebook can be very powerful.

would have to agree with you there about Facebook being best for targeting consumers. I've always found there is very little interest in business pages on Facebook. I'm guessing because most people use the sight logged in on a personal account to chat to their mates.

I've put Twitter down as my vote as this is where I became aware of this site. I also have a presence on the other forms of social media and find LinkedIn very good to keep an eye on what my online and offline contacts are up to in the work place as well as engage in groups and answering questions.

Yes, me too! I love that Twitter is so easy to use and because you only have 140 characters you need to be punchy and to the point, which gets you generally thinking about how to get your point across consisely, and people are more likely to read something short than something droning on for pages and pages (unless they are deliberately setting out to read something like an article because they've chosen to). And it's really easy to share information quickly.

I must admit I don't use Facebook for business - it may be simply because I got bored of it from a personal point of view quite a while ago now, and it's put me off using it for business. But I do like LinkedIn.

I'm finding Facebook a bit high maintenance before there is any activity, with Twitter there is still some feedback comment even when there is a minimal number of posts.
