What do people think is the most important SEO factor when building a website?

Would I be correct in thinking that having lots of good quality links to the site is the biggest factor?

Having inbound links is good, but they must be relevant and from good websites.

I have been doing my own SEO for a couple of years after attending a couple of courses, we have had some very good results from some of the pages we have posted on our website.

One of the most important factors I have found is to do good content around your keywords. The content needs to be at lease 250 words long and include your keywords. Keyword research is important to try and get some long keyword (i.e 4 or 5 words). It is also important to ensure that your page is based on the right content, we have written a few pages and then checked them to find that the word used the most is something completely different.

The best text to use is exactly the page name if you can, sometimes this is difficult to do, but ensure that you at least use the keywords. This is where it is good to get all your page names as keywords.

One thing to avoid at all costs is doing a link "click here" or similar.

Fresh relevent content is very important. If a site contains 'stale' text, then it is possible that the organic rankings could slip. However on the other side of the coin, if you make to many changes all at once, then this can also go against you

What I have found is if you leave the main homepage, about us, contact us & product text alone, but create a news page (or similar) and add regular news or updates, then this would be an extremely positive move.

Also, press releases could prove to be useful - but just remember reference your website a couple of times in the press release
