I would absolutely agree with the point made by Elaine:
I think that Social Media is an important part of any marketing strategy. The main thing to realise is to make sure that you are using the right social media platform suited to your target audience. From a B2B perspective I have tried Facebook and it doesn't work very well so concentrate my efforts on engaging on Twitter and LinkedIn which is more my target market. It is worth keeping track of click throughs etc to see if a particular campaign/social platform is working for your business.
Deciding your choice of social media platform wisely is essential if you are going to get the results you are looking for. People register on different social networks for very different reasons, and understanding their motivations is the key to succeeding.
I would also argue that the statistic of 34% finding social media ineffective for marketing would suggest that 66% find it effective. I believe that those who are not seeing results from social media are quite simply doing things wrong.

It just doesn't fit for most businesses and I've always thought that business activity can seem very intrusive in a social network. Twitter in my experience is probably the most effective (I've opened accounts and gained clients through it).
Google + though is very interesting from the point of +1's on local SEO
